GetResponse is the tool we recommend to UK stores that are in the early stages of email marketing or working with a tight budget. Its free tier is the most generous on this list — 500 contacts with unlimited sends and no time limit — and its EU data residency means GDPR compliance is handled by default, not by configuration.
The free tier in practice
GetResponse’s free plan covers 500 contacts with unlimited email broadcasts. That is a meaningful difference from Klaviyo and Omnisend, both of which cap free users at 250 contacts. For a new UK store building its first email list, GetResponse’s free tier is likely to last 12–18 months before a paid upgrade becomes necessary.
The free tier includes autoresponders (email sequences triggered by signup) and basic segmentation. What it does not include: advanced automations based on purchase behaviour, A/B testing, and webinar hosting. These require the Email Marketing paid plan.
EU data residency
GetResponse is headquartered in Warsaw, Poland. All customer data is stored in the EU by default. This is not a configuration option — it is simply where the servers are. For UK businesses, this means data transfer to GetResponse satisfies UK GDPR requirements via the EU–UK adequacy decision without any additional steps.
This matters in practice: a UK Shopify store that signs up for GetResponse, imports its customer list, and starts sending email is GDPR-compliant from day one. The same store using Klaviyo needs to actively select EU data residency during account creation — a step that is easy to miss.
All-in-one scope
GetResponse includes landing page creation, conversion funnels, and webinar hosting alongside email marketing. For stores that also want to build product launch pages or run live demos, having these tools in one account is convenient. For stores that only need email marketing, the additional features are irrelevant overhead — the interface is more complex than Omnisend or Brevo as a result.
Our verdict
GetResponse earns its place on this list primarily through its free tier and its GDPR default compliance. For UK stores that are starting out, growing their first list, and want the peace of mind of EU data storage without paying for it, it is the strongest starting point available.
For stores that have outgrown 500 contacts and need deeper Shopify integration, Omnisend is the natural next step. For stores that are more focused on automation complexity, ActiveCampaign is worth evaluating. But for the early stage — GetResponse, every time.
